HISTORIC SPANISH POINT BIRDING INFO

Bird Walk at the Point

“Today we spotted a small flock of white pelican as they floated on the surface of Little Sarasota Bay.
You know it’s only in winter you can see them migrate through the area. They usually stop off here and
stay awhile.” Nancy Paul, Site Horticulturist, Historic Spanish Point December 30, 2008.

This is just one example of comments heard every day by staff and visitors who see or hear rare and
fascinating birds while on site. On the second Saturday of the month from January to April at 8am, you
can be the one to spot a bird you’ve never seen before while on an exclusive early tour of Historic
Spanish Point. Bird Walk at the Point is a seasonal program and the tours are led by experienced bird-
watchers who happen to be longtime museum volunteers.

Winter and early spring avian visitors to Historic Spanish Point can include species you might not find
where you live because they are drawn to the natural habitats and gardens. In fact, every year a pair or
two of Wood Ducks nest near the Ornamental Water Garden and American Bald Eagle nest on site. Last
spring Bird Walk at the Point visitors witnessed the large male eagle teaching a fledgling to catch fish
near Webb Citrus Packing House.

Bring a good camera, binoculars, and snack for after the tour and park at the Visitors Center where this
special tour begins. Admission for non-members is $9 Adults, $8 FL res. or Seniors 65+, $3 Kids age 6-
12. Historic Spanish Point members and kids under age 6 are admitted free every day. For this program
we request all admissions be paid in cash as the volunteer tour guides will collect in the parking area.

Historic Spanish Point is at least 90% accessible by sturdy wheelchairs and strollers. A former
volunteer coordinator used a medically necessary electric chair and had no problem going almost
everywhere. The paths that are not paved are made of crushed shell. Our lovely boardwalk is smooth
and an easy incline.

I have attached a general press description of the museum. We were referred to your website by John
Roche, Park Manager of Oscar Scherer State Park.

Thanks for your support!
