100' of picnic tables in front yard. Bird feeders year round.
Hummingbird feeders spring through mid-September. Excellent brding from parking
lot, front yard, and first 100-300 meters/yards along flat trails
leading east and west from Headquarters. Birders often seen birding from car
in parking lot! Nesting season birds often seen at Headquarters
include: California Quail, Red-shouldered Hawk, Black-chinned Hummingbird,
Anna's Hunningbird, Nuttall's Woodpecker, Downy Woodpecker, Hairy
Woodpecker, Common (Red-shafted) Flicker, Western Wood-Pewee, Willow Flycatcher
(Endangered Southwestern race), Black Phoebe, Ash-throated Flycatcher,
Tree Swallow, Oak Titmouse, Bushtit, Bewick's Wren, House Wren,
Western Bluebird, Yellow Warbler, Common Yellowthroat, Summer Tanager, L!
ark Sparrow, Song Sparrow, Bullock's Oriole, Lesser Goldfinch, and
Lawrence's Goldfinch. Winter birds include Spotted Towhee, Fox Sparrow,
Lincoln's Sparrow, White-crowned Sparrow, Dark-eyed Junco, and Pine
Siskin (most years). Entrance road to Headquarters off CA Hwy. 178 often
good for nesting season Great Blue Heron, Red-tailed Hawk, American
Kestrel, Black Phoebe, Western Kingbird, Common Raven, Western Bluebird, Blue
Grosbeak, "Kern" Red-winged Blackbird (subspecies endemic to the Kern
River Valley and nearby Walker Basin), and Tricolored Blackbird. Be on
the lookout for White-tailed Kite, Golden Eagle, Prairie Falcon,
Greater Roadrunner, Say's Phoebe year round, ducks and shorebirds in wet
field in spring, swifts and swallows in migration, Ferruginous Hawk and
Mountain Bluebird in winter.
