Pondicherry National Wildlife Refuge
The Pondicherry National Wildlife Refuge features a 1.6 mile universal access trail along an old railroad grade
that was improved in 2007 for wheelchair use. The 8 foot wide trail is flat and leads to a viewing platform
overlooking Cherry Pond. The viewing platform is also universally accessible. The platform features
outstanding views of the Presidential Range of the White Mountain National Forest. Over 230 species of birds
have been recorded at the Pondicherry Refuge including 130 species that breed here. In addition to birds and
scenic views, the Pondicherry National Wildlife Refuge features boreal forest and excellent opportunities to
see moose, black bear, beaver and otter.
The trail is open year round but due to heavy snow in the winter is only suitable for wheelchairs from about
May 1 to October 20. Mosquitoes and black flies can be a problem in June and July so bring insect repellent.
There are no toilet facilities at the refuge but they are available in nearby communities.
Additional universal access trails are being designed and construction will begin in the summer of 2008 on
these new trails.
